Zack Snyder on expanding his Rebel Moon universe with comics, animated series and podcasts

November 5, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Netflix is very much in the Zack Snyder business, making Rebel Moon one of the largest franchises since Stranger Things.

As to how far Netflix is willing to go to allow Snyder to flesh out his Rebel Moon universe, it’s quite impressive. During an interview for Total Film, Snyder tells the outlet that he’s the one who calls the shots for this franchise and will be the one who pushes it in new directions.

Snyder jokes, “I’m the gatekeeper for what’s possible. I’m the only one who knows where the whole story is going, and I do have it mapped all the way.”

As for what is on that Rebel Moon map? There are comics, anime, and even a podcast coming. He reveals, “We’re doing a narrative podcast, and an animated comic book, and an animated series. They all take place before the events of the movie. So you can start to understand the vastness of the mythology that we’ve been working on.”

Co-writer Kurt Johnstad continues to reveal the plans, revealing that the Rebel Moon feature itself is the tip of the iceberg:

“The world is very, very detailed and fleshed out,” Johnstad says. “There’s hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents of methodology and mythology and lore. The timeline goes back 800 years from our movies.” The extent of the roadmap is literally quite large, “There’s a ruler with inches underneath that whiteboard,” says Johnstad. “And the two movies are literally two or three inches of that entire 12-foot span.”

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire will have a limited theatrical run ahead of its Netflix streaming debut this December [watch the trailer here] and the prequel comic book series Rebel Moon: House of the Bloodaxe will follow in January 2024.

Rebel Moon‘s colossal ensemble cast includes Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Staz Nair.

“When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.”

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire streams on Netflix from December 22nd, 2023, while Part 2: The Scargiver is released on April 19th, 2024.
