Villordsutch reviews Star Trek/Green Lantern #4…
The crossover event of 2015 continues here, as Starfleet and the Green Lantern Corps team up in the middle of a ring-powered galactic war! The evil Nekron has arrived in the Star Trek universe… with his eye on resurrecting the planet Vulcan itself! Don’t miss out on the latest chapter of this franchise-spanning epic!
After last month’s issue [review here] hell came to the Star Trek universe: not just aboard the Enterprise, or on Kronos and Romulus, and I’m not even talking about the destruction of USS Constellation. I’m talking about when we witnessed a glow being emitted from what was the location of the planet Vulcan; slowly in the silence of space, the now shattered planet began to congeal in front of us.
Sapphire explains the final stages of the Universe they left and the dread that Ganthet may have inadvertently doomed this universe too, with the oncoming grasp of Nekron. Hal Jordan explains to the crew the current problem with the dwindling power of the rings, the fact that they have no actual way to charge them due to the power batteries being destroyed by Nekron and Saint Walker currently being in the care of the Doctor.
On Romulus we discover that Larfleeze has taken control over both the Orange Senate and is currently holding Decius at bay demanding more information on the Federation. We return to the Enterprise to see Scotty awake in Sick Bay checking the scans on the rings he managed to grab before the accident. It’s at this point Uhura picks up an S.O.S. from Starbase Twelve, who are under attack, with Hal Jordan sensing this is a ring wearing aggressor he takes flight telling the Enterprise to follow him. Sure enough he was correct. As we arrive we discover scores of yellow Klingon Battlecruisers with Chang and Sinestro, along with the Glocon – the Gorn – and Atrocitus, the red ring-bearer laying waste to the starbase. As the Enterprise attempts to defend the starbase Sinestro turns his attention upon the crew. In our closing panels we finish on Nekron’s opening move as the rest of the ring-bearers battle.
Issue #4 – initially – is weighted on the lore of the Green Lantern; this is good news for readers like myself who have generally steered clear of this superhero in the past. You’re given more information on the capabilities and limitations of what they can and cannot do, you are also more than aware that the Yellow, Orange and Red ring-bearers are rapidly exhausting their powers with their manic grasp for Galaxy-ruling domination; with Nekron’s plan coming into play this cannot be a good thing. Mike Johnson is delivering something truly macabre with Nekron, so much so I actually want this comic to remain as canon and what we are seeing – on the final pages – to stay in the Star Trek universe.
The artwork, as we’ve come to expect, from both Angel Hernandez and Alejandro Sanchez (art and colours) is fantastic. I’d like to see this partnership working more often with Mike Johnson on more Star Trek comics as all three of them make an excellent team, delivering a perfect package. Also just to highlight if you’re looking for the comic on the shelf I was extremely happy to see that amazing work of J.K. Woodward is appearing on the “Cover B” of this issue.
Once again Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War shows you how a crossover comic should be done. Balancing between both Star Trek and the Green Lantern with ease, introducing new fans to a franchise and keeping current fans fired up. If you haven’t started this series already you’re really missing out.
