Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits $600 million worldwide

April 23, 2014 by Gary Collinson

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has continued Marvel Studios’ fine run of box office form, with the Phase Two sequel having now passed $600 million worldwide.

With $205 million domestically, The Winter Soldier is now just $1 million away from overtaking the North American haul of Thor: The Dark World, while globally the Chris Evans-headlined sequel is fast approaching Iron Man 2 ($623.9 million) and Thor: The Dark World ($644.8 million).

Despite competition from rival superhero flick The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the Captain America sequel should have no problem overtaking Thor: The Dark World, which would make it the third-highest grossing Marvel Studios release behind The Avengers ($1.518 billion) and Iron Man 3 ($1.215 billion).

As it happens, The Winter Soldier also looks set to surpass Warner Bros. Superman reboot Man of Steel ($668 million), which would bode well for the big showdown between the two film’s sequels on May 6th, 2016, if it wasn’t for the small matter of The Dark Knight being thrown into the mix for Batman vs. Superman…

Captain America: The Winter Soldier  sees Chris Evans joined by Marvel veterans Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Maximiliano Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell) and Cinematic Universe newcomers Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) as Sam Wilson / Falcon, Emily VanCamp (Revenge) as Sharon Carter / Agent 13, Frank Grillo (Zero Dark Thirty) as Brock Rumlow / Crossbones, George St-Pierre (Death Warrior) as Georges Batroc / Batroc the Leaper, and Robert Redford (All Is Lost) as Alexander Pierce.
