Paul Bettany on playing The Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron

April 14, 2014 by Gary Collinson

We’ve known for a while now that Joss Whedon will expand the roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, bringing in Godzilla duo Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen as mutant ‘miracle’ twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, while Paul Bettany is also set to add to his voice work as JARVIS by bringing life to The Vision. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the British actor has spoken a little about his new role in the eagerly-anticipated sequel…

“The [Vision] can do all sorts of things, but I’m not allowed to really talk about them and what we’re going to because there might be a Marvel agent in the room who will actually wrestle me to the ground and fire me. It’s very exciting for me but everything’s a double-edged sword because I was playing JARVIS for years. My job was I would turn up at a recording studio for 45 minutes, do my stuff, they’d give me a huge bag of cash and then I would go home. Now it turns out they’ve found me out and want me to actually do something. It’s not right.”

The Vision made his comic book debut in The Avengers #57, and is a “synthezoid” creation of Ultron, the sequel’s big bad, who turns on his creator before becoming a member of the superhero team. His powers include the ability to alter his density and mass and phase through objects, as well as possessing superhuman strength, agility and reflexes and the power of flight.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set for release on May 1st 2015 with Whedon directing a cast that also includes MCU veterans Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) and Samuel L. Jackson alongside new additions James Spader (The Blacklist) as Ultron, and Thomas Kretschmann (Dracula) as Baron Strucker.
