Denzel Washington says he is “probably too old” for Black Panther

September 9, 2014 by Thomas Roach

Denzel Washington has had his fair share of movie roles, winning Oscars and stealing the hearts of audiences for a few decades now. Recently he has been rumoured to be attached to a range of superhero movies – something he has never done in his varied career. With Batman v Superman he was rumoured to have been approached for the roles of Green Lantern and Lex Luthor, while speculation has linked him to the role of the Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview with Cinema Blend Washington was asked whether Marvel has approached him for the role of Black Panther and he replied: “Nope, I’m probably getting too old. They didn’t make the Black Panther yet, though, did they? I heard that they have been talking about it. That’s cool.”

A Black Panther movie may be a few years off yet, so maybe Washington would be up for playing the role. Note that he said he was “probably getting too old” but surely that won’t stop him. Denzel Washington is currently 59 and still looking younger than he is. There is no reason that he could not play a superhero. He’s in the upcoming film The Equalizer which is likely to be action packed, and Liam Neeson – who is 62 – is still showing he can do action roles at his age.

Other actors that have been rumoured for the role of Black Panther include Chadwick Boseman and Chiwetel Ejifor. Idris Elba and Djimon Hounsou’s names have also been mentioned although they already have roles in the Marvel Cinematic universe as Heimdall in Thor and Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy respectively.

Would you like to see Denzel Washington play Black Panther? Do you think he is too old? Let us know your thoughts…
