World of Warcraft subscriber count jumps up ahead of new expansion

October 15, 2014 by Tom Powter

Despite many stories about the decline in popularity of World of Warcraft, it seems the imminent arrival of a new expansion is doing wonders for the subscriber count.

While Activision Blizzard’s quarterly earnings call isn’t for another month, they’ve published their subscriber count a little earlier and it’s certainly a testament to the game’s longevity. As of October 14th, World of Warcraft is sitting comfortably on 7.4 million subscribers – up a whopping 600,000 from their last reported 6.8 million.

It’s likely that the impending release of World of Warcraft’s fifth expansion, Warlords of Draenor, is pulling people back to the game, while enticing potential newcomers. The expansion is set to arrive on November 13th and is currently in the beta stages. It will raise the level cap from 90 to 100, while introducing revamped character models, new dungeons and raids, as well as player-built garrisons in which non-playable characters can be made to collect items for you.
