David S. Goyer discusses Constantine’s chances of a second season

December 3, 2014 by Gavin Logan

John Constantine was always going to be a difficult nut to crack and while DC’s other television newcomer The Flash continues to receive positive reviews after getting a full season order on the back of the phenomenal success of Arrow, the Hellblazer hasn’t been given the same privilege, let alone the green light for a second season…

At least not yet.

According to Executive Producer David S. Goyer, Constantine is “solidly in contention for a second season of NBC, which is still supporting it.”

Despite viewing numbers being lower than expected Goyer went on to say in a recent interview that “It’s not dead, at all…Constantine got caught in the midst of a change that is happening at the networks. It gets big numbers on DVR and online views, but it is sort of a tweener that doesn’t fit the traditional viewing box at the big networks…It’s frustrating what happened because creatively we’ve really started to hit our stride and people are responding to that. If I were a betting man, I would say there’s an excellent chance for a second season.”

The character John Constantine – played on the show by Matt Ryan – is a creation of Alan Moore (Watchmen, From Hell) and first appeared in the 1984 DC comic The Saga of the Swamp Thing. Four years later he got his own comic-book Hellblazer, which the NBC show is based on.

Let us know your thoughts on Constantine and whether it deserves a second season.
