When the deal was announced that Marvel and Sony had come to a terms for Spider-Man to appear in their movies and kick off another reboot to the series in 2017, it was thought that Sony would have full creative control over the character and his direction.
With Amy Pascal stepping down from her seat of control, comic book movie fans were concerned when Tom Rothman took her place. Rothman is notorious for hating comic book movies when he working at 20th Century Fox and was the biggest blockade against a Deadpool movie being made, as well as banning Sentinals from appearing in any X-Men movies. He also micro-managed X-Men Origins: Wolverine to the point where he had the sets re-painted without telling director Gavin Hood. Many believe that Rothman is the reason why Marvel and Fox have an unhealthy relationship.
With Rothman now holding the keys to the Sony castle (and therefore the future of Spider-Man), how will the wall crawler fair? Well according to Latino-Review (who ordered a “mob hit” on us, fyi), we have nothing to worry about.
“We have information from a source suggesting there is no financial involvement whatsoever and no direct creative control over Spidey coming from the old guard,” they write. “Amy Pascal still has a say in the Mom-and-Pop arrangement she has with Feige, but Disney didn’t want to unite [Ike] Pearlmutter, [Avi] Arad and [Kevin] Feige in earnest. This is the solution. What does that mean? It means Marvel might have a bit more control than we thought. It means the new Spider-Man has been insulated from BOTH Avi Arad and new Sony head, superhero property curse, Tom Rothman.”
Badass Digest also add, “everything I have heard is that Marvel is calling most of the shots on this new movie. There’s been a lot of language in the press to help Sony avoid some embarrassment, to make this look less like admitting defeat.”
As a follow up to our previous story where The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider was “95% sure” Spider-Man would be black or Latino, Latino-Review are “96% sure” he’ll be white.
Nothing official as of yet, but there are rumours circulating that we’ll be getting our first tease of Spider-Man in the post-credits of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
