Disney’s Cinderella set for massive $100 million worldwide opening

March 12, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

It looks like Cinderella will certainly be going to the ball this weekend, with Kenneth Branagh’s new live-action take of the classic Disney animated film set to have a huge opening across the globe.

Released in the US and several international markets tomorrow, Cinderella looks set to win the weekend, especially in light of the lack of PG or PG-13 rated films in the cinemas at present. Opening in 3,845 cinemas on Friday (350 of which are IMAX screens), the film will preview tonight in many parts of the US, with early estimates tracking the film at a $50-$60million opening, with Disney hoping both kids and adults will flock to see the film.

It will hope the tracking proves correct, as Cinderella will face competition from Lionsgate’s The Divergent Series: Insurgent and Warner Bros. comedy Get Hard over the coming weeks before the arrival of box-office behemoth Furious 7 on the first weekend of April.

Disney is also hoping it plays well in the overseas markets, with estimates having the film opening to roughly the same $50 – $60 million frame as its domestic bow for a total north of $100 million.

Released on Friday in the US and on March 27th in the UK, Cinderella stars Lily James (Downton Abbey), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Helena Bonham-Carter (Les Miserables), Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter), Derek Jacobi (Gladiator) and Stellan Skarsgaard (Avengers: Age of Ultron).
