Ben Affleck on his initial reaction to being offered Batman, and the difference between DC and Marvel movies

July 3, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday Entertainment Weekly unloaded a batch of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice images as part of its Comic-Con issue, giving us a peek at the hotly-anticipated DC movie ahead of next week’s SDCC panel [check them out here, here and here]. Well, now they’ve posted some comments from The Dark Knight himself Ben Affleck, who described how he felt when he was first offered the cape and cowl.

“My first reaction was ‘Are you sure?’ At the time I was 40, 41, and had just finished Argo, and I felt like ‘This seems like a strange way to get to Batman.’ But Zack convinced me… I thought if I was going to direct a movie like this, which I would like to do at some point, I need to have something of a refresher course of how these movies are done.”

There has of course been a lot of speculation that Affleck could direct a Batman solo movie, and judging by those comments, it certainly seems like a strong possibility.

Meanwhile, back in March, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara spoke about his studio’s upcoming DC slate, describing them as “a little bit edgier than Marvel’s movies” and now Affleck has weighed in with his own thoughts on the DC vs Marvel debate, stating that:

“[DC] is more mythic, it is more grand in that way, and it is a little more realistic. Just by their nature, these films can’t be as funny or as quick or as glib as Marvel movies.”

So, it seems the big selling point for the DC Cinematic Universe – from the Warner camp at least – is that their movies are more “realistic” than the competition, but does that make Marvel’s movies “glib”? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release on March 25th 2016 and sees Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Harry Lennix (General Swanwick) and Christina Wren (Carrie Farris) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Holly Hunter (The Piano), Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) and Scoot McNairy (Argo) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
