SDCC: Deadpool leaked footage – Flickering Myth Reaction

July 13, 2015 by Luke Owen

The Flickering Myth Team react…

In a previous edition of Flickering Myth Reaction, the team gave their thoughts on the concept footage that leaked online for the Deapool movie. Since then, the movie was not only announced by has been made with footage shown at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. As with all footage shown at the event, it found its way online (see it here, if it’s still available). But what did our team make of it?

Scott J Davis: Awesome. ‘Nuff said….

Chris Cooper: Underwhelming, actually. Quite surprised by that. I’m not writing it off, but I didn’t find it that funny. Maybe I need the official version. Anyway, it’s built up enough goodwill so far for me to stick with it.

Luke Owen (deputy editor): Just as I suspected: annoying, dull, predictable and – above all – incredibly unfunny.

Helen Murdoch: Loved it, but not sure how it will work as a full movie. Could either be really annoying or hilarious.

Kris Wall: I’ll give it a chance but I still feel Deadpool works better on screen than on page. Some of the lines in the footage felt forced and unfunny. Hoping the final film surprises me.

Andy Naylor: I was very worried about this movie, but the trailer amused me. I hope it’s not like a general comedy movie when all the good jokes are shown in the trailer. I liked it overall, happy it’s very sweary and happy he addresses the audience.

Gary Collinson (editor-in-chief): I thought it looked promising. I laughed a couple of times. Looking forward to seeing more. However, if every other line is a quip, it could easily wear thin.

Scott J Davis: Wow, the negativity is surprising. I’m syced for this more than most things so I’m holding on for a great time. And I love Reynolds, Sue me…

Chris Cooper: I’m as surprised as you Scott! I expected to love it.

Oliver Davis (Flickering Myth TV Producer): Whoah…I laughed at least six times. The trailer has already passed the six laugh test. Hopefully that great Green Lantern gag isn’t the only joke at Reynolds’ expense. I’d like it a lot more if the whole movie is just him ripping on his own failed superhero ventures. Imagine if they make a joke about Deadpool in Wolverine! I’m getting a self-reflexivity-on. There’s a bunch of other great jokes, too. The Megasonic Teenage Warhead one. The ‘Freddy Kruger face’ one. I’m so suprised at how much I actually enjoyed this trailer, considering how little time I have for Deadpool. Which leads me onto the bad. The stuff with Deadpool actually in it isn’t funny. There’s no genuine expression to go with the delivery. The Reynolds stuff worked because he’s got fantastic timing (see: Two Guys, A Girl…), but everything with Deadpool is lost behind those CGI eyes. As great as the Green Lantern joke is, the film hasn’t learned from how much humanity can be sucked out of a character by covering the eyes.

Villordsutch: Now I enjoyed the trailer for the simple fact the 4th wall (as expected) was completely smashed to pieces. Along with that we did have some lines which appealed to the immature child buried deep inside the husk of this ancient man frame. Could I watch this for over an hour I’m unsure, but for this short blast I was certainly entertained.

Rob Kojder: Take everything Luke said and the opposite is how I feel.

James Garcia: I think the action looks great and Reynolds looks like he’s having a TON of fun, but the humor definitely feels forced to me. It’s as if they found out they could have a hard-R rating and added a bunch of F bombs and crude humor just for the sake of it. Perhaps it’ll work better in context, but it might go a bit over the top. We’ll see.

Unlike the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, this was not all that positive, but there were some writers who dug it. What did you make of the footage? Let us know in the comments below.
