Bill Finger to finally receive credit for co-creating Batman

September 18, 2015 by Gary Collinson

If you’ve ever read a Batman comic, seen a movie or episode of the various TV shows (and let’s face it, who hasn’t), then you’ll have no doubt seen the name Bob Kane, who since 1939 has been credited as the sole creator of The Dark Knight.

Well, that’s about to change, as comic book writer Bill Finger is finally set to receive recognition for his role in creating the iconic crime-fighter, with DC Entertainment announcing that Finger will be listed as co-creator of the character from the second season of Gotham and the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice onwards.

A statement, released to The Hollywood Reporter, reads:

DC Entertainment and the family of Bill Finger are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement that recognizes Mr. Finger’s significant contributions to the Batman family of characters.

“Bill Finger was instrumental in developing many of the key creative elements that enrich the Batman universe, and we look forward to building on our acknowledgement of his significant role in DC Comics’ history,” stated Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment. “As part of our acknowledgement of those contributions,” Nelson continued, “we are pleased to confirm today that Bill Finger will be receiving credit in the Warner Bros. television series Gotham beginning later this season, and in the forthcoming motion picture Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Although Bob Kane came up with the idea for Batman, his initial sketch looked very different from the final design:

Finger’s suggestions included the removal of the wings and domini mask in favour of a cape and cowl, adding gloves and removing the red from the costume. He also came up with the name Bruce Wayne, and wrote the majority of the early Batman stories, including his debut in Detective Comics #27. Finger passed away in 1974, with his contributions having gone unacknowledged by Bob Kane, although Kane changed his stance in his latter years, stating in his 1989 autobiography that: “I must admit that Bill never received the fame and recognition he deserved.”

Well overdue, but a good move on DC’s part at long last.
