Rumour: Willem Dafoe playing an Atlantean in Justice League

May 12, 2016 by James Garcia

Last month, Willem Dafoe was cast in Justice League, though his role was left secret. Since then, fans have been coming up with all kinds of theories on who he could play, and speculating whether or not he’d be friend or foe. While we still don’t know any real details about his role, a new rumour at least suggests where he’ll hail from.

According to Birth.Movies.Death, Dafoe will play an Atlantean in the film, which means he could also star alongside Jason Momoa in Aquaman (assuming his character survives the inevitably dangerous events of Justice League, of course).

The new report also sheds some light on how director Zack Snyder will accomplish the film’s underwater sequences, which were a bit rough in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here are the details:

“Rather than shoot in a water tank this time Zack Snyder has set up an elaborate rig on a green screen stage – it’s a two armed rig, with Momoa clutched in one arm while the camera is clutched in the other. They two arms are preprogrammed to move in sync so that Momoa can do all kinds of maneuvers while the camera moves around him. I’m assuming there’s a similar rig for more elaborate flying stuff. Momoa’s hair will be CGIed into a flowy, underwater look.”

Devin Faraci also suggests that Aquaman is undergoing “a complete page one rewrite,” but until that’s confirmed by other sources, we’ll just leave that in the rumour pile for now.

Justice League is currently in production under director Zack Snyder, and newly-minted executive producer Ben Affleck. It is scheduled to blast into theaters on November 17, 2017.
