Game of Thrones showrunners rule out involvement with potential spinoff: “For us, this is it”

September 19, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Game of Thrones scooped the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive year last night (and in the process, set a new record as the most decorated TV show in Emmy history).

The epic fantasy series has just two seasons remaining, but given its incredible success, there’s been a lot of speculation regarding potential spinoffs set in the world Westeros.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer David Benioff has revealed that he fully expects there to be more series inspired by George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, but he and co-showrunner D.B. Weiss will not be involved.

“You might want to ask George about that,” said Benioff when asked about a prequel. “It’s a great world that George created. I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it. That’s really a question for George.”

The question was then put to George, who responded: “Well, I do have thousands of pages of fake history — everything that led up to Game of Thrones — so there’s a wealth of material there, and I’m still writing more. [However], at the moment, we still have this show to finish, and I still have two books to finish, so that’s all speculation.”

Would you like to see further television shows set in the world of Game of Thrones once it finishes its eight-season run, and if so, what? Let us know in the comments…
