Marvel announces start of production on Black Panther, Andy Serkis to return to MCU

January 26, 2017 by Justin Cook

Marvel Studios officially revealed today that production on Black Panther, the upcoming 18th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has begun. While this information has been known for the past couple of days through set photos and tweets, the studio’s press release also provides plenty of previously unrevealed tidbits about the project, including a full cast list and a plot description.

Chadwick Boseman’s titular superhero/T’Challa will be joined in the cast by Michael B. Jordan (Creed), Lupita Nyong’o (The Jungle Book), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Angela Bassett (London Has Fallen), Forest Whitaker (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Andy Serkis (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Letitia Wright (Glasgow Girls), Winston Duke (Modern Family), Florence Kasumba (Captain America: Civil War), Sterling K. Brown (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) and John Kani (Nothing but the Truth).

While nearly all of the previously listed cast members’ involvement with the film has been known for quite some time, what hadn’t been confirmed is that MCU veterans Kani, who played T’Challa’s father in Civil War, and Serkis, who played Ulysses Klaue/Klaw in Avengers: Age of Ultron and had been rumoured for well over a year, would return. The cast is set to shoot in Atlanta and South Korea.

Read the film’s official plot synopsis below…

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
