Avi Arad says Spider-Man will only cross over with The Avengers if Spidey is the main focus

April 29, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Every time a new Spider-Man movie is released, the question raises it’s head – usually by the cast and crew of said Spider-Man movie – will Sony’s wall-crawler ever cross over with Marvel Studios’ The Avengers?

Earlier this month, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad ruled out the possibility until they’d “run out of ideas” for the rebooted Spidey franchise, and now Arad has been at it again, this time stating that a crossover would only ever happen if Spider-Man was the main focus of the team-up:

“I think there are some stories that will fit beautifully into a cross,” Arad tells The Toronto Sun. “Spider-Man would be incredible mixed up with those other universes. But if we want to do that, the crossovers, it has to be a story that is absolutely centered on Spider-Man. We cannot be second banana to anything out there. Because this is the king. This is the one that influenced young people from birth. I’m not preaching, but Spider-Man, Peter Parker, who is in all of us, is too important to go in and use it as a sidepiece for corporate purposes. The studio may disagree with me, some fans may disagree with me. I don’t care.”

So, Spider-Man won’t play second fiddle to the Avengers… but the producers will happily use the publicity from teasing a crossover every time a new Spider-Man movie rolls around. Expect more of this talk in 2016.
