Three non-Saga Star Wars films confirmed

May 7, 2014 by Chris Cooper

Disney really are making the most of their new license. Not only did I visit a Disney store over the weekend to find it festooned in Star Wars merchandise, but it seems we’re going to get plenty more films from the House of Mouse.

The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger confirmed today during a Q2 Fiscal 2014 Earnings Conference Call that “at least three” Star Wars films are in development beyond the new trilogy of “Saga” chapters. Up until now, only two of these standalone projects were confirmed.

These films have previously been referred to as origin films, and will be keeping our multiplexes busy with Jedi and scruffy smugglers as they will be released in the years between the main episodes.

The only information we have so far is that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are involved with the screenplays. The stories being based on Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda are just rumour.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII meanwhile is set to star John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow in addition to original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. It will open in wide release on December 18th 2015.
