James Gunn would like to direct the Shazam movie, but he can’t

James Gunn is an active member of social media and will often start discussion topics and interact with his fans on his Facebook page. During one such discussion, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer was asked if he would be interested in directing one of the films in the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe, or if he was prevented from doing so. Gunn responded:

“I am precluded. Would have loved to have done Shazam.”

Presumably having been involved with Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy and its upcoming sequel will contractually prevent Gunn from making a film for a rival company. In the past Gunn has revealed that he is a massive DC fan and a comic book fan in general, so it’s no surprise that he would also be interested in directing for both companies.

James Gunn is currently working on the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy which is due for release May 7, 2017. Shazam is set for release April 5, 2019 and so far Dwayne Johnson is confirmed for the role of Black Adam, with futher casting details yet to be announced.
