Jeremy Irons talks Alfred role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

December 9, 2014 by Thomas Roach

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has recently wrapped shooting but is not due for release for another fifteen months yet. The film is set to introduce us to lots of new characters and reimagining of characters we have seen on screen before. One of those is Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth, played by Jeremy Irons, and so far not much has been said or revealed about the character in this version. Until now.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Irons revealed a bit of information about his role of Alfred, stating that it’s “not a large role” and adding that: “He is quite a different Alfred than we have seen so far. Zack Snyder had very clear views about what he wanted. I would just say he’s more hands-on perhaps than just a butler.”

So although it is a small role it sounds like it will be far removed from the version Michael Caine played in The Dark Knight Trilogy, with previous rumours suggesting Irons’ Alfred has been inspired by the Batman: Earth One incarnation of the character, who is a former British intelligence agent.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25th, 2016 with Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Harry Lennix (General Swanwick) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Holly Hunter (The Piano), Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) and Scoot McNairy (Argo) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
