Rooney Mara, Felicity Jones and Tatiana Maslany testing for Star Wars standalone film

January 21, 2015 by James Garcia

According to THR, Disney and Lucasfilm are currently looking at three actresses for the first Star Wars solo film, which is set to hit theaters in 2016: Academy Award nominees Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) and Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany.

Maslany has reportedly already met with director Gareth Edwards to test for the role, while Mara and a handful of others are expected to go in this week. Jones is simply on the “want list,” though there may be some scheduling conflicts with her role in Ron Howard’s upcoming Inferno adaptation, which is due to begin production this summer.

UPDATE: It’s also being reported that Rooney’s sister Kate Mara (American Horror Story, The Fantastic Four) is under consideration.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know anything about the film, though early rumors suggest that it could be a Han Solo standalone film (and somehow involve Aaron Paul?). Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) penned the first draft, and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Fantastic Four) has reportedly stepped up to take a crack at the script.

We’ll have more information on Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars film as it becomes available. In the meantime, leave your thoughts about the possibility of these actresses making the trip to that galaxy far, far away in the comments below.

The first standalone film will hit theaters on December 16, 2016
