Strand Releasing acquires Peter Greenaway’s drama Eisenstein in Guanajuato

April 16, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Strand Releasing has acquired all US rights from Films Boutique to Peter Greenaway’s historical drama Eisenstein in Guanajuato. Led by Elmer Bäck and Luis Alberti, the cast includes Maya Zapata, Lisa Owen, Stelio Savante, Rasmus Slätis and Jakob Öhrman.

A passion project of filmmaker Peter Greenaway’s, the visually appealing film received its world premiere in competition in Berlin and centres on Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s romance with a local male guide while shooting Que Viva Mexico in Guanajuato in 1931.

The film is produced by Bruno Felix and Femke Wolting at Submarine, San Fu Matha at Fu Works and Cristina Velasco at Paloma Negra.

Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing negotiated the deal with Jean-Christophe Simon of Films Boutique to acquire the US rights and plans for a late 2015 or early 2016 release after the North American premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival.

Founded in 1989, Strand Releasing is one of the leading U.S. distributors of foreign language, American independent, and documentary films in the U.S. in theaters, on DVD/Blu-Ray and via Video-On-Demand.
