Mad Max director George Miller keen on exploring Furiosa’s backstory

January 11, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With Mad Max: Fury Road earning plaudits left, right and centre, it’s looking increasingly likely that George Miller will get to return to the wasteland for a fifth entry in his post-apocalyptic action saga, and while the director has that Charlize Theron’s Furiosa would be absent from any sequel, it now seems the filmmaker may be having a change of heart given fan reaction to the character.

“She’s a pretty compelling character so it’d be great to tell her story,” Miller tells EW. “Her backstory is pretty interesting, we only allude to it in this movie. This movie is on the run, people don’t have much time for recreational talk. You have a sense of her having gone through stuff, that’s what the movie is trying to do. You know, you’re trying to put a lot of iceberg under the tip, I like saying.”

“One of the things that’s really gratifying, people are reading the film on more than the surface, the events of the movie, and are just picking up a lot of stuff,” he continues. “Which is very deliberate, you work hard to get all that in there so it’s not just empty calorie action. You’re getting stuff out of it, you’re learning about characters and their relationships and the world and so on. So in many ways the audience is picking up a lot about Furiosa, or enough to intrigue, and she’s got an interesting story.”

Are you excited about the prospect of delving into Furiosa’s backstory, or would you like to see Miller keeping his focus on Max in any future movies? Let us know in the comments below…
