Zack Snyder discusses the ending of Batman v Superman and the formation of the Justice League

March 28, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Warning: Spoilers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice follow. Big ones. You have been warned..

Over the past few days we’ve brought you comments from Zack Snyder defending The Dark Knight’s actions in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as discussing the surprise cameo from one of the Man of Steel’s pals, and now the director has been chatting to Entertainment Weekly about the end of the movie, as well as looking forward to the formation of the Justice League.

Discussing the death of Superman during the climactic battle with Doomsday, Snyder stated that: “The ending of BvS was designed to show that Superman was willing to make himself collateral damage if it meant saving others. I felt like we had to kill Superman in this movie in order for us to have been serious with the entire premise of the film. And that’s not to say that he clearly is gone forever.”

There was another motive behind the decision to kill Superman: “I wanted Bruce Wayne to build the Justice League. I felt like with Superman around, it’s a different conversation when you create the Justice League, right? It’s like, ‘Me and Superman, we want to make a Justice League.’ [Other heroes would be] like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’ll join!’ I just feel like Bruce Wayne having to go out and find these seven samurai by himself, that’s a lot more interesting of a premise.”

Of course, despite his demise, we haven’t seen the last of the Man of Steel (as suggested by the final scene of the dirt rising from his coffin), with Snyder teasing that: “I felt like there’s a mythological journey for Superman. There’s the birth, death, and resurrection thing. And when you bring him back, who knows what he is when he comes back.”

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
