Doug Liman says Edge of Tomorrow 2 will “revolutionize how people make sequels”

October 30, 2016 by Gary Collinson

A couple of days ago we brought you some comments from Doug Liman on how he plans to “turn the comic book genre on its head” with his Justice League Dark adaptation Dark Universe, and now the filmmaker has been chatting to Collider about the planned follow-up to Edge of Tomorrow, suggesting that it’s both a sequel and a prequel, and will “revolutionize how people make sequels.”

“[Edge of Tomorrow 2] is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because, first of all, the story is so amazing — much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film — and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel,” said Liman. “I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like, ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that [is] unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels.”

Edge of Tomorrow 2 is being scripted by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (Race), and is expected to see the return of Tom Cruise, although there’s been no word as to whether Cruise’s co-star Emily Blunt will be back.
