Ryan Reynolds comments on Tim Miller’s Deadpool 2 departure over creative differences

November 15, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in October came the unexpected news that Deadpool helmer Tim Miller had exited the upcoming sequel amid reports of creative differences with Ryan Reynolds, and now the star has offered his first comments on the situation during an interview with GQ (via SuperHeroStuff).

“All I can really add is that I’m sad to see him off the film,” said Reynolds. “Tim’s brilliant and nobody worked harder on Deadpool than he did. I know when I need to exert control, and I know when I need to let go of it. I’m not gonna go and sit with Tim Miller and say, ‘The visual effects of Deadpool need to be done this way.’ The man is a visual-effects wizard. But there are character and tone things that I know really well. And I’ve also been with this thing the longest out of anybody, aside from the guys that wrote the comics. Eleven years I’ve been trying to get this Sisyphus rock up the hill, and it kept rolling back on top of me. So I’m gonna be all the fuck over it from the moment it starts to the moment it finishes.”

If rumours are to be believed, Reynolds and Miller clashed over the casting of Cable, with Miller wanting to cast Bloodline’s Kyle Chandler, while the director was also said to be keen to go in a new, stylized direction for the sequel, whereas Reynolds preferred to continue the raunchy R-rated comedy style of the original.

Deadpool 2 is now searching for a new director, with David Leitch (John Wick) said to be frontrunner on a shortlist that also includes Drew Goddard (Daredevil, The Cabin in the Woods) and Magnus Martens (Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
