Michael Fassbender says Assassin’s Creed planned as first instalment of a trilogy

December 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

In just a few short days, Assassin’s Creed will make the leap from video games to feature films as 20th Century Fox unleashes its hotly-anticipated movie adaptation, and should it prove successful at the box office, it seems it could be the launch pad for a trilogy of films based around Michael Fassbender’s Callum Lynch and his assassin ancestor Aguilar de Nerha.

“This is the sort of origin of his story,” Fassbender tells Cinema Blend. “We have an idea of where he’s going to go over the next two films. We kind of did a three-film arc. We’ll wait and see how people respond to this, but for sure, we have an idea of where he’s going to go next.”

Of course, before we start looking forward to Assassin’s Creed 2 and 3, we’ll have to see if the first one manages to avoid the dreaded video game movie curse…

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed is set for release on December 21st in the States and on January 1st in the UK. The film reunites Michael Fassbender with Macbeth director Justin Kurzel and co-star Marion Cotillard, while the cast also includes Michael K. Williams (Ghostbusters), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Brendan Gleeson (Calvary) and Ariane Labed (The Lobster).
