Comic Book Review – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #67

February 16, 2017 by Chris Cooper

Chris Cooper reviews Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #67…

“Desperate Measures” Part 1! The government’s hunt for mutants begins in earnest and their unconventional tactics will see the TMNT hounded like never before! No mutant is safe!

If I had to describe TMNT #67 in one word it would be ‘vicious’. Not since the severe beating that Donnie took from Bebop and Rocksteady have I seen violence that made me wince at each panel. It definitely does not mess around. Santolouco strikes a good balance on how visceral the damage done is depicted. It’s neither excessive nor too soft.

It’s not all fighting though, as the story also manages to capture the struggle the turtles are currently facing. All four brothers are finding life difficult without the strong guiding hand of their father and they all show it in distinct ways. This scene is the strongest of the book for me as I completely understand why all of them think the way they do. Do you always want to be moving from battle to battle? Are the little things as important when you know there are demi-gods? Each brother has a strong case to make.

Whilst being careful not to give much away I do like that we’re things cross over between TMNT and TMNT Universe. I guess that’s OK if you get both titles but could be a bit annoying if you only have the budget for one. Saying that the script does do a job good of not only fleshing out characters you may have met before but it also gives more background to them. If you can I think you should get both each month. They’re both very good in their own ways.

We’re past the standalone issues that saw us out of 2016 and into 2017. They were of such high quality that I was reticent to get back into story arcs. TMNT #67 puts me at ease. Let’s do it!

Rating 7/10
