Thor: Ragnarok plot details revealed

March 9, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Yesterday Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first official images from Thor: Ragnarok [check them out here], and now for anyone wondering how the likes of The Hulk, Doctor Strange and Sakaar will factor into the storyline, or why the God of Thunder is sporting a new haircut, the site has shared some plot details for the Marvel blockbuster.

The report reads:

When we last saw Thor, he was flying off to figure out who was manipulating the Avengers at the end of Age of Ultron. Eventually, he hears rumblings of trouble in Asgard: His evil brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has been impersonating their missing father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Loki’s rather lax governing leads to the reemergence of an imprisoned Hela (Cate Blanchett). Thor’s initial encounter with Hela gets him blasted to Sakaar, a barbaric planet ruled by the charming but nefarious Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), a tough, hard-drinking warrior hiding out on Sakaar brings the god to the Grandmaster.

It’s on Sakaar where Thor meets the planet’s most popular and successful gladiator, The Hulk, and from this point on Ragnarok becomes a “road-trip film”, drawing inspiration from the likes of 48HRS., Withnail & I and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. and showcasing Chris Hemsworth’s comedic talents. As for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange, as revealed in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange, he’ll be assisting Thor in his search for Odin (whose location – and new look – has already been revealed in these spoilery set photos).

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge and Sam Neill in an as-yet-unrevealed role. It is set for release on November 3rd, 2017.
