Free Comic Book Day Review – Guardians of the Galaxy FCBD 2017

May 5, 2017 by Tai Freligh

Tai Freligh reviews Guardians of the Galaxy FCBD 2017…

First, blast off with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Groot as they head for the stars and right into an all-new ongoing series! Creators Gerry Duggan, Aaron Kuder and Ive Svorcina bring you over-the-top action and out-of-this-world adventure as the stage is set for May’s highly anticipated All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1! As this unlikely band of misfits returns to outer space once more, nothing will prepare them for their first run in with the new Nova Corps!

Then, head back down to Earth and the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen as the blockbuster creative team that brought you Civil War II, Invincible Iron Man and Ultimate Spider-Man bring you their next explosive epic in…The Defenders! Superstar creators Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez and Justin Ponsor unite Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist as they go head-to-head with the new criminal element in the Marvel Universe. What new player is running things in the underworld? Find out here with a 10-page tale that leads directly into The Defenders #1 this June!

I’m a big fan of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Defenders, so when I saw a two-fer with this free comic, I knew I had to read it.  The main story was well drawn and enough of a tease to make me interested in where the story goes from here.  I’m a bit jaded by the movies, so I always envision the characters as the ones from the silver screen and when comic books don’t look like them it’s a bit disappointing, but the fact of the matter is that the Guardians of the Galaxy started as a comic book, so I can give it a pass.

I enjoyed The Defenders story even more than the main story for this comic book.  Having just seen the trailer for The Defenders television show premiering on Netflix, I was already pumped up for this title.  I love all of these characters and still have Daredevil comic books from thirty years ago in a comic book rack at home.  I love seeing how all these characters interact with each other and the plot-line that draws them together.  The illustrations and coloring on this story are fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.  My favourite part was seeing Iron Fist and Daredevil in their classic costumes.  The television shows all took a lot of liberties with the costumes (Daredevil has a different suit and both Iron Fist and Luke Cage never suited up in their classic comic book attire).  If you’re a big Marvel fan, then you’ll enjoy this double-header.

Guardians of the Galaxy FCBD 2017 is available in comic book shops on May 6th for free.

Rating: 10/10
