Milla Jovovich has some strong feelings about the Resident Evil reboot

June 25, 2017 by Jordan Jones

It was recently announced that the Resident Evil franchise is in the process of being rebooted with James Wan overseeing production. The future plans for the franchise are quite expansive, targeting six movies in total. With the inclusion of a visionary horror director like James Wan, this will be a very different franchise indeed. So, what does the previous team think of the new direction of the Resident Evil film franchise? Franchise star Milla Jovovich, at least, has some strong feelings about rebooting the franchise so quickly. Speaking to ComicBoo, this is what the actress had to say:

“They’ve announced a reboot? Okay, well good luck with that. I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse. There’s a danger to that. They’ve been wanting to reboot Resident Evil for a long time, and listen: I love the Resident Evil world. I think it’s a great property, I would do it if I was a producer. I think what made Resident Evil so special is that the people involved really loved what they’re doing and really were fans of the game.”

So what advice does she have for James Wan, and company?

“I would suggest that you find people that have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots. I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There’s some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they’re not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity.”

The Resident Evil movie franchise is an incredibly divisive one. There are those who find the movies to be great escapist entertainment, and delightfully silly in their over the top action. Others find the series guilty of straying too far from the source material, eschewing horror for mindless action. Some fans will be thrilled to see the franchise move in another direction, while it’s certain that others will feel things are moving a bit too fast; Milla Jovovich being one of them.
