Zordon wasn’t alone in the original Power Rangers opening

June 29, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The director of Power Rangers has said that Zordon wasn’t the only Ranger (excluding Rita of course) in the film’s original opening scene.

The film opens up with Zordon as the Red Ranger being confronted by Rita who at that point was in possession of the Green Ranger coin. The other rangers are alluded to but the team isn’t featured during this sequence.

Well, according to director Dean Israelite in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, this wasn’t always the case.

“There was an original drop that I read when I came onto the movie that had a more extensive battle in the beginning of the movie. And it had, I think, if I remember correctly, some of the other Power Rangers in there.”

Apparently, Israelite decided to strip things back when he was assembling the movie, with focus just on Zordon and Rita to give the opening more of a character driven feel.

“I always wanted to make it very subjective, very personal and this kind of intimate opening that set your expectations, that you know that you’re going into a superhero movie that’s going to try to do something a little bit different with the genre. It’s trying to be this more sort of personal character-driven story as opposed to a big fantastic opening that I think we’ve come to expect from a lot of movies. And I felt that the salient point, the story point, was really all about Zordon and Rita, and the rest just cluttered that drama.”

This isn’t the only nugget the director has offered up recently, with a previous comment providing the reasoning behind making Rita the film’s Green Ranger.

Saban’s POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

Power Rangers stars Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, R.J. Cyler as the Blue Ranger, Bryan Cranston as Zordon, Bill Hader as Alpha 5 and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa.
