Studio 8 adapting superhero comic Black for the big screen

August 4, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 has snapped up the movie rights to Black Mask Studios’ superhero comic book series Black, which takes place in a world where only African-Americans possess superpowers.

Created by Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith, the series has recently finished its initial six-issue run and follows a teenager called Kareem Jenkins, who survives a police shooting and discovers he is a lot more powerful than he ever knew. As he connects with others who share similar powers, a widespread oppressive global conspiracy to keep the knowledge of such superpowers from the world — and especially the black community — themselves is unveiled to all.

Studio 8’s EVP Jon Silk is overseeing development of Black, with Black Mask’s Matteo Pizzolo producing and Osajyefo and Smith attached as co-producers.
