Logan is the first Academy screener sent to Oscar voters

September 15, 2017 by George Chrysostomou

The 90th Academy Awards are still a while away, but with plenty of high quality movies already on voters’ radars, now is the time for studios to start making moves to ensure that their films are given the recognition they deserve.

According to Deadline the first DVD screener sent to the Academy voters is the Fox superhero film Logan, starring Hugh Jackman as the titular hero. Of course, it probably  comes as little surprise to many fans that Fox would push this film for Oscar gold, considering the success that it achieved for the studio.

Whilst superhero movies have never fared too well at the Oscars, this may change with James Mangold’s Logan, a film which by all accounts could be in with a shout for Best Screenplay, or for acting nominations for the moving performances of both Jackman and his co-star, Patrick Stewart.

Spelling the end of Jackman’s Wolverine in X-Men universe, Logan was not only an emotional piece but also beautifully directed, with action that was both thrilling and gritty. Last year’s Academy Awards saw DC’s Suicide Squad win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, so there’s every chance that Logan has the potential to be in the mix when the 90th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 4th.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Logan reunites Hugh Jackman with The Wolverine director James Mangold and also stars Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal.
