Rumour: The Skrulls to appear in X-Men: Dark Phoenix

October 19, 2017 by Gary Collinson

During the San Diego Comic-Con in July, it was announced that The Skrulls are set to make their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2019’s Captain Marvel movie.

However, if rumours are to be believed, we may have another Quicksilver scenario on our hands, as fan site Universo X-Men is reporting that the shape-shifting alien race is also set to feature in next year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

According to the site, the film includes a scene at the United Nations building in New York, where Professor X and company are discussing mutant rights. However, the building subsequently comes under attack from alien ships, with actors reportedly sporting motion-capture suits and clearly identified as the Skrulls.

It has been widely reported that X-Men: Dark Phoenix will take the franchise cosmic, although it had been assumed that the Shi-ar Empire would feature in the movie, with Jessica Chastain portraying the Empress Lilandra. However, Chastain suggested last month that the speculation is wide of the mark and that she isn’t Lilandra after all.

As James Gunn clarified on Twitter this summer, the rights to the Skrulls are co-owned by Marvel and Fox, owing to their association with the Fantastic Four. And as we saw with X-Men: Days of Future Past and Quicksilver, Fox isn’t against beating Marvel to the punch when it comes to using co-owned characters and getting them to the screen first. So, while we have little to go on, it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility…

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set for release on November 2nd, 2018. Simon Kinberg is directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Jessica Chastain and Lamar Johnson.
