Young Justice: Outsiders will be “more mature and a little darker”

July 31, 2018 by Gary Collinson

After a near-six year absence, the fan favourite animated series Young Justice will return early in 2019 with a third season/revival – titled Young Justice: Outsiders – set to make its debut on the upcoming streaming service DC Universe.

Speaking to Nerdist, Young Justice co-creator Greg Weisman has been talking about the move to the streaming platform, and how this allows the producers to tell a darker and more mature story.

“Because we’re on a streaming service and we’re not on Cartoon Network, we don’t have Cartoon Network’s standards and practices,” said Weisman. “Departments can’t tell us what we can and can’t do. That has freed us up, and this season is more mature. It’s a little darker. Definitely delves deep into our characters and it also allows us to delve deeper into the DC universe.”

As we saw from the R-rated Titans trailer (and the fact we also have an adult-orientated Harley Quinn animated series to look forward to), DC Universe certainly doesn’t seem to be imposing any constraints on its content, so it perhaps isn’t too surprising to hear that Outsiders will be adopting a more mature approach to its storytelling.
