Nintendo finally settles the NES pronunciation debate

August 4, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It’s a debate that’s raged since the early 80s: just how do you pronounce ‘NES’, the abbreviated name of the classic Nintendo Entertainment System console.

NEZ? NESS? Or – god forbid – N-E-S?

Well, the answer is finally here, direct from Nintendo itself, with the video game giant confirming that the correct pronunication is in fact ‘Ness’.

Here’s a screenshot from Wario Ware Gold on 3DS, which features a museum of Nintendo consoles, and specifically refers to the NES with the “s” sound:

In the museum section of the Japanese version of Wario Ware Gold, you can unlock some slides showcasing the Famicom. Also included is a picture of the NES. Within the description, Nintendo themselves says that “NES” is pronounced “Ness”. pic.twitter.com/Vg5JjXgJgy
