Tony Todd to return to Candyman in Jordan Peele’s sequel

May 30, 2019 by Ricky Church

When it was first announced that Get Out and Us filmmaker Jordan Peele would be producing a Candyman reboot/sequel, many wondered if Tony Todd, the original Candyman, would also be making an appearance.

Todd starred in the original film as well as its sequels, but had not yet been approached for the reboot. That has now changed as Todd, speaking with Sofa King Cool Magazine, has revealed he now has a role in the upcoming reboot.

“Out of the blue I got a phone call from Jordan Peele,” Todd stated. “We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen (Aquaman) will play an artist who becomes obsessed with the Candyman legend. Joining him and Todd in the film is  Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk) as his art dealer girlfriend.

The new film, a “spiritual sequel” to the cult 1992 horror, Candyman is being directed by Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) from a script by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. It will take place in the now-gentrified Cabrini-Green housing project of the first movie.

Filming on Candyman is set to get underway in the spring ahead of a release on June 12th 2020.
