Jake Gyllenhaal on the challenge of playing Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home

July 3, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Spider-Man: Far From Home star Jake Gyllenhaal has spoken about how he took on the challenge of playing Mysterio.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is the next film up in the MCU, having the unenviable task of having to follow Avengers: Endgame. The film introduces Jake Gyllenhaal into the mix for the first time, seeing the actor play the popular comic book role of Mysterio.

Mysterio isn’t quite the same character as he is in the comics, however, and Gyllenhaal, when speaking to Screen Rant, commented on the challenge of playing what most people know as a villain:

“In the comics, he’s an antagonist and he’s a villain. To me, I thought the take on him as really a hero and joining up with Spider-Man in this movie to fight the real enemy was really interesting. To me, I find sometimes the idea of a character to be too on the nose, particularly when you’re dealing with mythology and that kind of thing. And he was a much more complicated character than that, so it was really fun. It allowed for a lot of different room, but I loved a different take on a character that people would expect one thing from but they’re going to get another.”

Fans can see Jake’s performance as Mysterio for themselves as Far From Home is now officially in cinemas around the world.

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!

Spider-Man: Far From Home features the return of Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Angourie Rice (Betty Brant), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Martin Star (Mr. Harrington), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Mysterio.
