Rumour: Lashana Lynch is the new 007 in Bond 25

July 14, 2019 by Gary Collinson

As revealed by the film’s official synopsis, James Bond has left his position in MI6 at the start of the upcoming Bond 25, and if rumours are to be believed, the film will waste little time in introducing his replacement in the 00 branch, with The Daily Mail reporting that Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch is the new 007.

According to an alleged source for The Mail: “There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says ‘Come in 007’, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman. It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman.”

There’s long been talk from some sections of the audience that the Bond franchise should go down the Doctor Who route by gender-swapping its iconic super spy. However, producer Barbara Broccoli recently dismissed the possibility, stating instead that her preference would be to create a new female character:

“Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male. And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”

Well, if there is any weight to this rumour, it seems that may well be exactly what they’ve done…

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica.  His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Bond 25 is set for release in the UK on April 3rd 2020 and in the U.S. on April 8th 2020 and stars Daniel Craig (James Bond), Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny), Rory Kinnear (Tanner), Léa Seydoux (Madeleine Swann), Ben Whishaw (Q), Jeffrey Wright (Felix Leiter) and Christoph Waltz (Blofeld), while new additions include Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049), Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel), Billy Magnussen (Velvet Buzzsaw), Dali Benssalah (A Faithful Man) and David Dencik (Top of the Lake).
