The Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes movie will be released theatrically

July 20, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Back in November, AMC immediately followed up Andrew Lincoln’s final episode in The Walking Dead by announcing that the actor would be reprising the role of Rick Grimes for three TV movie sequels, but – as we discovered during TWD’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday – those plans have now changed.

At the end of the panel – which included brand new trailers for The Walking Dead and companion series Fear the Walking Dead, as well as confirmation on a departing cast member – moderator Chris Hardwick had one last surprise for the audience, announcing that AMC, Skybound and Universal Pictures are teaming up to bring the first Walking Dead movie to cinemas. Check out the teaser here…

As yet, there’s no word on a potential timeframe for the film, with The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple previously telling EW: “I am extremely hard at work on the first one right now, and most likely filming next year, though I’m freaking out about deadlines right now, so I’m not going to tell you exactly when because it will only make me pass out. But it really is going to be sooner than later. On the flip side, these are not going to be made on television schedules. This is going to be on feature schedules, and they’re going to be big, so they’re going to take a minute to make.”

Are you excited about the big screen debut of The Walking Dead? If you’re one of the millions of viewers who’ve switched off the show, will Rick’s return be enough to tempt you to the cinema? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
