Joaquin Phoenix says playing Joker was “one of the greatest experiences” of his career

September 10, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Joaquin Phoenix has admitted during his time of portraying the Joker was “one of the greatest experiences” of his career. In a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival (via @RaminSetoodeh), Pheonix had nothing but praise for playing the Clown Prince of Crime.

“There was something that was drawing me towards it, and it just evolved as we worked together,” Phoenix explained. “It started becoming something more than I could have anticipated. And it was one of the greatest experiences of my career. I think it gave us back so much, like every day, whatever we put into it, it was just so energizing and exciting and inspiring.”

Phoenix is the fifth actor to play this iconic villain on the big screen, following Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto. So far, he seems to be holding his own after positive reactions from critics and the Joker movie winning the prestigious Golden Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival.

oker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker is set for release on October 4th 2019 and stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
