Female-led John Wick spin-off Ballerina finds its director in Len Wiseman

October 10, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Lionsgate has hired Len Wiseman to direct Ballerina, the first female-led spin-off film in the hugely-popular John Wick franchise.

Reported by Deadline, Ballerina is currently on fast-track and focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.

For fans who have seen John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Ballerina will most likely focus on the facility led by Anjelica Huston’s The Director who trains ballerinas and trained Wick to be an assassin, therefore, already laying the groundwork for expanding this portion of the world.

Ballerina is being produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and series director Chad Stahelski, with star Keanu Reeves and Kaley Smalley, listed as executive producers. The script is being written by Shay Written, who wrote the Zack Snyder-directed Army of the Dead for Netflix and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

Wiseman’s credits include another female-driven action franchise, the vampire/werewolf Underworld series. He also directed Live Free or Die Hard, and TV series such as Hawaii 5-0, Lucifer, Sleepy Hollow, The Gifted, and Swamp Thing.
