Breaking Bad creator embarrassed that he didn’t want Lalo to appear in Better Call Saul

April 23, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan didn’t want Lalo to appear in Better Call Saul at first but is glad he was wrong.

There were so many possibilities ahead of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould when they were creating Better Call Saul, so many connections to its successor Breaking Bad, that Gilligan didn’t want to follow through on everything.

This included the new beloved villain Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton), a character who was mentioned by Saul in a throwaway line in Breaking Bad. Lalo has now become a fan favourite and was involved in the exhilarating events of Better Call Saul‘s season five finale this week. But Gilligan wasn’t on board with the idea at first. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said:

“I’m embarrassed to admit this now, but back in Season One or Two, when I was more active on the show, Peter kept saying, ‘We’ve gotta answer who Lalo is,’ and I finally said, ‘I don’t know that we need to answer every single question.’ And, man, I was wrong. If Peter hadn’t pushed, we wouldn’t have Tony Dalton. We wouldn’t have this amazing character. So, some of the ones that I found the most frustrating to deal with, that I said, ‘Ah, the hell with them. Who cares?’ tend to be the best ones of all.”

Lalo has certainly changed the game since he was introduced in season four and events of the season five finale will mean he is an even more dangerous threat to Jimmy, Kim, Nacho, and Mike in the show’s final season.
