David Arquette officially confirmed to star in new Scream sequel

May 18, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Sheriff Dewey Riley is back on the case! David Arquette has been officially confirmed to star in the upcoming relaunch of Scream, confirmed by Peter Oillataguerre, President of Production for Spyglass Media Group.

Arquette, of course, played the comedic yet heartfelt Dewey in all four of Wes Craven’s Scream movies, and this landmark announcement confirms that the new film will be taking place in the same world.

The project will see Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not) direct, as the third member of Radio Silence, Chad Villella, will executive produce. Serving as EP alongside Villella is the original writer, Kevin Williamson.

Radio Silence said in a statement today, “It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies, in particular, mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers. Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades. We’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.”

Kevin Williamson added, “I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy, and Radio Silence on the next Scream. Their take on the movie is both original, inventive, and honors Wes’s legacy in a wonderful way. ‘Ready or Not’ was my favorite horror film of last year, and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the ‘Scream’ universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Though Arquette is the first member of the film’s ensemble to be officially announced at the time of reporting, conversations are underway with other legacy cast members. Earlier this year, Neve Campbell revealed that she spoke with Radio Silence regarding the potential return of Sidney Prescott, and even Matthew Lillard expressed interest in returning.
