The Medieval Times weren’t any more unrealistic than any other era in human history, yet for some reason an entire genre of speculative fiction has formed around simple concepts like gentry, knights, and kingdoms. They romanticize it to ridiculous heights, throw in epic lance fights, and top it all off with a layer of magic.

We call it the sword and sorcery, or S&S, genre, and it’s a fantasy that has become insanely popular across the world, including Japan. There, the animation industry has produced some top quality anime that have embraced S&S elements while adding their own twist.
