Oni: The Lost Cyberpunk Child of Bungie and Rockstar

August 14, 2020 by Red Stewart

CryMor Gaming presents a look into the troubled history of a little game called Oni…

Creating a memorable cyberpunk title is a hard-sell for indie developers, but you would think major companies like Bungie and Rockstar would have no problem with it right?

Well, they actually took a swing at this concept back in 2001. That’s right, the same year Halo: Combat Evolved was set to come out, Bungie decided to create an action shooter called Oni that was inspired by the anime Ghost in the Shell. Combining h2h combat sharp shooting, it looked to be a winner, especially with major developer Rockstar agreeing to help publish.

So what went wrong? Well, it turns out there were a lot of problems going on behind-the-scenes, especially with Bungie set to be acquired by Microsoft in the early-2000s. As a result, Oni suffered in the marketing department and failed to find an audience.

But we’re not doing anyone a service by crunching such a big story into a few sentences. Thanks to the folks at CryMor Gaming, we have the history of Oni fleshed out for you to view. Check out the video below, as well as their channel, for more content…
