Idris Elba and John Cena team for Amazon action film Heads of State

October 3, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The pair will meet up in next year’s The Suicide Squad, but that won’t be the only time Idris Elba and John Cena will team-up as Deadline reports that Amazon Studios has won Heads of State, an upcoming action film that will see Elba and Cena co-starring with one another.

In the report, Deadline notes that the project was sold after a Zoom pitch presentation with the actors, screenwriter Harrison Query, and the producers Peter Safran and John Rickard. The actors have officially signed on for the project, with Amazon also agreeing a near-seven figure for the writer. Producer Safran previously worked with both Elba and Cena on James Gunns’s The Suicide Squad and felt strongly about the chemistry the duo showed in that film.

There are very few details known about the project currently but it has been pitched as a “90s style two-hander,” with a “high octane premise” that will be part Air Force One, part Hobbs and Shaw. With a title like Heads of State and the comparison to Air Force One, expect this to take a presidential spin on an action film.

At the time of reporting, there’s no director attached to Heads of State.
