Spider-Man 3 begins filming as Sony denies Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield casting reports

October 17, 2020 by Gary Collinson

It seems that cameras are now rolling on Sony and Marvel Studios’ as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3, with Murphy’s Multiverse reporting that Sony’s Executive Marketing Director Camila Pacheco made the announcement at Brazil’s ExpoCine event.

The film will see Tom Holland reprising the role of the web-slinger for his third solo outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and sixth appearance overall), with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home helmer Jon Watts back in the director’s chair.

Holland is being joined in the cast by returning cast members Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), while his Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame co-star Benedict Cumberbatch is also on board as Doctor Strange and Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx is playing Electro – a role he previously portrayed in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The inclusion of Foxx’s Electro and Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange (who is gearing up to embark on a journey into the “Multiverse of Madness” in his own solo sequel), speculation is running wild that the upcoming film will introduce the concept of the Spider-Verse – potentially tying in to Sony’s previous Spider-Man movies not to mention its current spinoff universe featuring Venom and Morbius.

None of this has been confirmed as yet, and Foxx himself has suggested that his Electro won’t be blue this time around, and so perhaps a completely different incarnation of the villain. However, various reports have been circulating among fan sites that Sony and Marvel have tapped previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to reprise their roles – something which has prompted Sony to issue a rebuttal with a studio rep telling Entertainment Tonight that “those rumoured castings are not confirmed.”

It’s an unusual step for a studio to respond to online “scoops”, and the wording of said response certainly isn’t an outright denial that Maguire and/or Garfield will appear in the film. With cameras now rolling, perhaps it won’t be too long until we get some official details on the movie and its cast.
