The Mandalorian may be getting a Boba Fett spinoff series

November 8, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

After seemingly making his return to the galaxy far, far away at the end of the season two premiere of The Mandalorian, it’s now being reported that Disney and Lucasfilm may be about to start production on a Boba Fett spinoff series for the Disney+ streaming service.

According to a report from Deadline, the trade has been hearing that a miniseries focussing on the Original Trilogy bounty hunter is readying for production imminently and could begin filming this month ahead of the third season of The Mandalorian early in the New Year.

Former Disney boss Bob Iger had previously teased that Lucasfilm was looking to expand The Mandalorian, suggesting “the possibility of infusing (the mothership series) with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”

Given his fan favourite status, Boba Fett would certainly fit the criteria for a spinoff and it is plausible that a miniseries could have been brought together quite quickly, seeing as Lucasfilm has already spent years developing an Anthology movie which was put on hold when The Mandalorian got the green light.

Deadline does stress that it has been unable to officially confirm the reports of the Boba Fett miniseries, and with extremely high levels of secrecy in the Lucasfilm camp and numerous Star Wars TV projects in development (including the Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi shows, and a female-driven series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland), specific details are hard to pin down. Hopefully we’ll have more information soon.

Are you hoping these reports are true? Does a Boba Fett series run the risk of potentially feeling too similar to The Mandalorian for its first spinoff? Let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

The Mandalorian season two sees Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin), Gina Carano (Cara Dune), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon) and Bill Burr (Mayfield) joined by new cast additions Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Katee Sackhoff (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Michael Biehn (The Terminator) and WWE Superstar Sasha Banks.

New episodes of The Mandalorian season two hit Disney+ every Friday.
