Rosie Perez is keen on a Birds of Prey sequel but hopes for less ageist jokes

December 6, 2020 by Gary Collinson

While it didn’t exactly set the box office alight upon release back in February, the subsequent pandemic that put much of the world under lockdown for the rest of the year means that the $201.8 million worldwide haul of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is enough to make the DCEU girl gang movie the highest-grossing superhero film of 2020.

Whether that tag is enough to convince Warner Bros. and DC Films to move ahead with a follow-up remains to be seen, but actress Rosie Perez has revealed to Uproxx that she’s open to reprising the role of Renee Montoya, but would hope that any sequel cuts back on the ageist jokes.

“I mean, if it happens, sure,” said Perez when asked if she’s open to the sequel. “When you said that, the first thing that came to my mind was, ‘Oh my God, I have to lose weight and get in shape again.’ Hopefully, there won’t be any ageist type of jokes in it as well. Having me called ‘grandma.’ That was the only thing, I was like, ‘Really guys? Really?’ I was like, ‘Would you have the nerve to say that to Helen Mirren, in her 50 million action movies?'”

Have you any interest in a Birds of Prey sequel, or could you see the team of Montoya, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett) popping up elsewhere in the DCEU? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) and sees Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollett (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
